Gandhi said the PM had "run away" from a debate in Parliament on the issue, while referring to him as a prime minister who claimed to have a broad chest. Rafale deal: Two days after targetting the government on the Rafale jet deal, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Sunday accused Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman of doing a "flip-flop" on the secrecy clause. He alleged that there was certainly a "scam" in the controversial deal with France.
The big question is how Nirmala Sitharaman pipped everyone to the post and bagged the heavyweight Defence portfolio. The PM may be pleased with Sitharaman’s honesty, hard work, draftsmanship and ability to give a précis of lengthy documents, but other factors also weighed in her favour.
Defence experts also feel that the frequency of incidents of incursions by the Chinese Army may go up in the coming months and years after the Dokalam face-off, and Sitharaman may face a challenge in handling such complex issues.
Sitharaman, who previously held the portfolio of Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, was appointed as the Defence Minister as part of PM Modi restructuring exercise in the cabinet. She was among the four junior ministers who were handed cabinet berths at the reshuffle.
Stressing that it is a huge responsibility, Sitharama credited her elevation to the cabinet to "cosmic grace" and said she was "very grateful" for the confidence exuded by PM Modi on her. Sitharaman is the second woman to lead the Defence Ministry in the country.
