Gandhi said the PM had "run away" from a debate in Parliament on the issue, while referring to him as a prime minister who claimed to have a broad chest. "For two and a half hours, the woman could not defend him. I had asked a straight question – answer yes or no – but she couldn't answer," he said, using the Hindi word 'mahila' for a woman.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and three service chiefs paid their last respect to the Lance Naik at Brar Square in New Delhi on Thursday. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia were also among others who paid their last respects to the Lance Naik. Appreciating Lt. Gen. Jacob he said that he was a straight forward man and his contributions played a very vital role in the development of the country. He further asserted that he developed good relations with him when he was governor of Goa. Lt. Gen. Jacob, 92, passed away on Wednesday morning following a 13-days illness. He played the key role in India's victory in the India-Pakistan war of 1971.

He also said that until the pain inflicted on the soldiers is transmitted, terror organisations will always enjoy giving pain to the country. He further stated that he is proud of the country's solders but he felt pained when the soldiers died.

Parrikar earlier said that he was deeply pained when a soldier lost his life.
