There are 11 lakh farmers with a cumulative Rs 8,500 crore debt. Under its loan waiver scheme, the state government had cleared Rs 12,000 crore to make 19 lakh farmers debt-free. The state has 1.56 crore farmers.

These loans were allegedly availed from various banks in the name of non-existent farmers while some were availed in the name of dead farmers.

According to Tiwari, the state government has set a target of Rs 20,000 crore for six districts of Marathwada and west Vidarbha each for this year. It is trying to ensure that all farmers get loan before June 15.

On July 24, 2017, Fadnavis had announced the Rs 34,200-crore loan waiver. The scheme was named Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Shetkari Sanmaan Yojna.

Almost 40 lakh of the total 1.37 crore farmers in Maharashtra are from drought-prone districts of Vidarbha and Marathwada. The government has allocated Rs 58,862 crore for crop loans for the year 2018-19.

While the figure for Vidarbha region would be Rs 20,401.56 crore (21.79%), it would be Rs 19,424.18 crore (20.75%) for Marathwada, the report stated.

State Cooperative Minister Harshvardhan Patil announced that the government plans to distribute Rs 13,726 crore as crop loan for the forthcoming kharif and rabi seasons.
