Between 2016 and 2019 the city officially recorded no case of child marriage. WCD officials said in most cases this year the pandemic and subsequent economic losses have forced several families to marry teenage daughters before they can turn adult.

While the committee plans to propose to make marriage certificates compulsory for every marriage, members said awareness will be required in tribal areas, which follow their own tradition for marriage.

According to police officials, an offence of rape, intimidation and child marriage was registered on July 21 where six persons - the aunt and uncle of the girls, the two grooms (which include one minor) and the grooms’ parents — have been booked.
