Using data from 82 countries, the study revealed that child marriage among boys is prevalent across many countries around the world, spanning sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, South Asia, and East Asia and the Pacific.
An analysis of the educational qualifications showed 17,202 were either matriculate or below graduate level. Another 3,420 did not mention their education, while 86 were illiterate and 91 with below primary level education.
The NHRC has based its recommendation on research that shows a strong correlation between a girl child’s education level and age of marriage, with better education levels showing lesser likelihood of her being married early.
