Sources in the AG office, however, said that no special audit of the project was being done as requested by PWD engineers but the audit covered the PWD’s entire Mumbai region, in which the Shivaji Memorial project falls.
"The government seems to be playing with the sentiments of people. Everyone in Maharashtra wants this memorial, except the government which is unnecessarily delaying the construction," alleged Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Dhananjay Munde.
The missive comes three weeks after a person drowned and 24 others had a close shave after a speedboat carrying visitors to the site of the proposed Shivaji memorial in the Arabian Sea off Mumbai’s Marine Drive, hit a rocky surface underwater and began to flood.
While 24 passengers on board were rescued, first by a passenger boat owned by Peasants & Workers Party legislator Jayant Patil and then by the Indian Coast Guard, one passenger, identified as Siddhesh Pawar (25) remained stuck in the sharply listing vessel.
