South India celebrates Pongal with great fervour

Madurai, Chennai, Jan 14 (ANI): Tamil Nadu celebrated the harvest festival of Pongal with great zeal and fervor on Thursday. People worshipped local Gods and offered sugarcane and observed fast among other forms of celebrations like cooking mush, porridge, curd rice, poli, payasam etc. Educational institutions in the state held special programmes on the occasion. Dressed in traditional wear, college students in Madurai city prepared beautiful patterns with powdered colours, apart from cooking porridge and other delicacies on the festival. Meanwhile, sugarcane markets remained abuzz in capital Chennai city as people thronged the markets to buy the festival essential.
