Hanoi Radio said in its latest battle report, however, that Chinese troops reinforced with six infantry divisions and hundreds of tanks and artillery pieces were intercepted by the Vietnamese north of Lang Son and suffered heavy losses.
Commending the security forces for displaying exemplary restraint during the period, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, "While the security forces have displayed exemplary restraint during this period, the terrorists have continued with their attacks, on civilians and SFs, resulting in deaths and injuries."
Five days after the Ramzan ceasefire came into effect, the valley has witnessed a series of militant attacks on security forces while cross-border shelling by Pakistan continues risking the lives of security personnel as well as villagers living beside the Pakistan border.
When asked about the possibility of aggression from the other side, Lt Gen Dua said, "The ceasefire order has a qualifier. If terrorists attack our forces, we reserve the right to retaliate in self defense."
