The coal blocks allocation cases are among the CBI’s longest running probes, with the agency last registering a fresh FIR in the case in January 2020. It has since 2012 filed multiple chargesheets and even closed many cases for lack of evidence or culpability.

During investigation, CBI had further claimed that in 2003, Daga filed an undertaking to MoC stating his intentions to either install a plant or to develop a coal mine.

In 2000, Daga applied to MoC for allotment of the Ekarjuna Extension coal block in Maharashtra for setting up a washery cum sponge iron plant of 60,000 tonne per year capacity in Warora area but it was rejected.

The Indian Express had reported Monday that at least one investigating officer (IO) of the CBI had complained to the agency director of “huge amounts” of money having “exchanged hands” and “corrupt” senior officers contaminating some probes.
