While the prisons department has directed jail superintendents, through an SMS, to undertake a caste survey of those booked under the liquor law, the home department has asked all jail superintendents in an internal WhatsApp group to give monthly details of top castes in each category.

"Liquor ban was introduced for the poor people. they were wasting a major part of their income on buying alcohol. Domestic violence was high. I did this for the betterment of poor," Nitish Kumar said.

Tiandong's bail plea was rejected twice earlier by a lower court on the plea that as the offence falls under section 38 (1,2) of the Bihar Excise and Prohibition Act provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years with fine.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar enforced complete prohibition in Bihar in April 2016 by bringing the new anti-liquor law in the state with stringent provisions.

Tiandong, who was residing at a building rented by the company in Anisabad, was held on Sunday and further investigation is underway to ascertain how he managed to get liquor in dry Bihar or whether he smuggled it in while coming to the state.

Gujarat, after its formation in 1960 out of Bombay State, continued the ban and still enforces it to this day. So basically, the manufacture, sale, consumption, and storage of alcohol is illegal in the state.
