Assam NRC

The National Register of Citizens (NRC), prepared in 1951, contains the names of all Indian citizens. To stop the illegal migration in border states, the updation process of NRC was started in 2013 on the direction of Supreme Courtand was completed in July 30, 2018. Any person, whose name does not appear on the 1951 NRC list, will be declared an illegal migrant and faces deportation or jail. The NRC exercise has become highly controversial, especially in Assam, where the base year of identifying citizenship is 1971, under the Assam Accord. People whose names appear on any voter list in Assam up to March 24 midnight, 1971 are eligible for NRC. The exercise has come under scrutiny as many people, whose forefathers and relatives were mentioned in the original list, fail to find their name in the updated draft. With the final draft set to be published on August 31, people in Assam are running against time to prove their nationality.
