Chidambaram, who was present in person in the courtroom, requested Special Judge O P Saini to grant an early hearing on his anticipatory bail applications as well as the chargesheet filed in the cases lodged by CBI and the ED.
Chidambaram also moved an anticipatory bail plea for “urgent hearing” in Delhi High Court in the INX media case. The ED had opposed anticipatory bail for Chidambaram as it said, "Karti was instrumental in getting illegal FIPB approvals with the concurrence and knowledge of the father."
Rajeshwar Singh has been at loggerheads with those in power at the Finance Ministry since his promotion. His file on promotion and absorption in ED was first blocked by then Finance minister P Chidambaram.
The ED claimed that the ASCPL received Rs 26 lakh as consultancy fee, days after the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) granted approval for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the Aircel-Maxis deal in 2006 when Karti’s father P Chidambaram was Union Finance Minister.
