Jonuzi had been subletting a room in a Melbourne home from Colton, who was also a tenant. Jonuzi first rented the room for three nights on Airbnb, but agreed to stay another week for Australian dollar 210.
Airbnb is expanding its business in China and hoping to spur growth in the world's most populous country. Last year it said it would more than triple its local workforce and double its investment in the region.
Japan, which Airbnb says is the top travel destination in the Asia-Pacific region for its customers, has long had a system of family-run guesthouses in which rooms are let out to visitors. Airbnb’s rapid expansion in Japan rode on the laxity in the enforcement of the minshuku (literally, inn) rules.
