Opinion | Why Has CEC Disqualified 20 AAP MLAs?

Three days before he retires, Chief Election Commissioner A K Joti has thrown a political bombshell of sorts by ordering the disqualification of 20 MLA from the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi, finding them guilty of holding an “office of profit,” which Mr. Joti says is violative of the Constitution. Joti is technically right of course because the constitution forbids any elected MP or MLA from holding another office from which he or she gains financially so that he or she isn’t tempted by any low or high-hanging fruit.
