Meet The Meos: The Muslim Gau-Rakshaks Of Mewat

In recent times, the Meos have been in news after 55-year-old Pehlu Khan from Alwar (also in Mewat) died after allegedly becoming the victim of a mob lynching when he was found transporting cows for his dairy farm. Following the outrage against the brutal murder, the Meos demanded that the cow be declared the national animal and its slaughtering banned completely. Underlying the Meo call for ban on cow slaughter, however, is a watery religio-cultural identity that manifests itself in a combination of ‘cow worship’ and namaaz.
