Assam Attack: 12 Civilians, One Militant Killed In Firing At Kokrajhar Market

At least twelve civilians have been killed in Assam’s Kokrajhar district after terrorists opened fire at a weekly market at Balajan Tinali here. While fifteen of them have been reported injured in the incident.

Police officials have gunned down one terrorist in an intense gun battle that lasted about 20 minutes. Additional forces have been rushed to the spot, even as other terrorists are being pursued by security forces. Apart from opening fire on the market, the terrorists also lobbed a grenade that ravaged three shops. Apart from this an AK-47 has also been recovered from the terrorists.

Officials suspect the involvement of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB).

Assam Chief Minister Sarabananda Sonowal has spoken with Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the incident, news agency ANI reported.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the attacked and said, “Our Govt is committed to protection of people of Assam, have directed senior officials to rush to the spot.”

“I am now rushing towards Assam, ” the chief minister said who was in Delhi for some meeting. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the matter and said PM Modi expressed his condolences.

CM Sonowal also said that an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakhs will be given to next of kin of people who have died, Rs 1 lakhs for those who have been injured in the attack. “Our Govt will take stern action against these extremist outfits, ” the CM added.
