As per protocol, the 3rd Battalion gets the list of undertrials a day before they are to be produced in court.
The incident took place Saturday afternoon as the van crossed a school in Hauz Khas.
The jail van, carrying 50 prisoners from Tihar jail no. 7 and 8, was being guarded by eight policemen.
The move comes in the wake of a woman doctor’s allegation that she was molested by a convict at the prison hospital.
The sudden rise in such applications came after the murder of two undertrials in a moving prison van in August this year.
DIG (Prisons) Mukesh Prasad confirmed the probe Thursday and said they were looking if there was any lapse on the part of prison authorities.

It has now directed the jail superintendent and the senior medical officer to appear before it, along with Kothari’s medical records.
3rd Battalion DCP S K Tewari confirmed to The Indian Express that it was planning to move court for the same, but refused to divulge details.
Inmates were also found smuggling banned items on their person or in their body cavities through the entry lounges, said the MHA.
Police said Ravinder Kumar had admitted to committing two such crimes in Bahadurgarh area and it needed custody of the accused to identify the sites of the alleged crime.
The high court had last week taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and issued notices to the prison authority.
