KATHMANDU: : The US has provided a sum of $50,000 for emergency relief to flood victims in eastern Nepal.

A US embassy release said the US AID’s office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) has authorised immediate release of $50,000 to provide emergency relief supplies to the flood victims. The OFDA response came in request from US ambassador Nancy J Powell.

Interestingly, the US relief is the first interantional assistance to come to the country after the CPN-M — still on its terrorist list — took over.

The disaster assistance will be used by Nepal Red Cross in partnership with Save the Children for local purchases and transport of relief supplies for people in Nepal who lost their homes in the flooding of August 18, 2008.

The US also hinted that it was willing to provide more relief if needed. “The US is prepared to provide additional assistance if needed, according to the US AID official.
