Bhopal, July 8: The Congress on Tuesday alleged that the accused in the Indore riots met the Chief Minister at his residence in the state capital when the Opposition party’s senior leaders were being denied permission to visit the riot victims in the commercial capital.

PCC chief Suresh Pachauri alleged that three persons from Khajrana locality, who are accused in the violence that occurred during the Bharat Bandh call given by Hindu organisations, met Shivraj Singh Chouhan. He said this to support the party’s allegation that the state actively colluded with rioters and was now protecting them.

A Government spokesman, however, described the alleged visit as “a figment of imagination”.

Four persons were killed and several others injured in Khajrana on July 3. One of the injured died on Tuesday taking the toll to eight.

The Assembly was adjourned for the second consecutive day after the Opposition insisted on a judicial inquiry into the violence. The Opposition also wants the Government to sack the collector and SP of Bhopal for the alleged insult to leader of Opposition Jamuna Devi, who was bundled into a van by the police while she was staging a sit-in outside the CM’s residence.

The Assembly witnessed unruly scenes when Opposition MLAs stood in the well, shouting slogans and refusing to let the Speaker conduct the proceedings. Even when the House reconvened after the first adjournment, they insisted that the Government order an inquiry into the violence and the CM resign forthwith.

The treasury benches, using their majority in the House, shouted down the Opposition MLAs who accused the Government of having sponsored the violence.

Speaker Ishwardas Rohani allowed the adjournment motion on the violence but no Opposition MLA spoke. Home Minister Himmat Kothari said 75 cases had been registered in connection with the violence. He said adequate security arrangement is in place in the state and the situation was normal now.
