NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 19: By the next session of Parliament, the Joint Parliamentary Committee set up under senior Congress MP Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi would be submitting a report providing generic and comprehensive definition of what entails office of profit that can be acceptable and implementable across the country in all state legislatures.

It would also provide clarity on the issue of whether legislators should have executive power in Government bodies that are set up primarly for developmental purposes and not get targetted for holding offices of profit.

The committee, set up to address the larger questions and concerns expressed by President A P J Abdul Kalam, would submit its report on the first day of the last week of the Winter Session. It would also look into constitutional and legal position relating to office of profit and suggest in-depth definination of the issue.

The committee has three legal heavyweights from the Rajya Sabha— Ram Jethmalani, BJP’s Arun Jaitley and Congress’s Abhishek Manu Singhvi. The others from Rajya Sabha are Sitaram Yechury of the CPI(M) and SP’s Veerendra Bhatia.
