LUCKNOW, MARCH 26: “My daughter-in-law gave her life for the dignity of her daughter-in-law and this is the way it should be. Even at this age, if I see a young girl being harassed, I will raise my voice. It is our duty. But the question is what is the duty of the police? Are they doing their job?”

This was how Rani Lila Ram Kumar Bhargava reacted as the body of daughter-in-law Mehar Bhargava was brought from New Delhi today. Mehar, wife of Congress leader Luv Bhargava, died yesterday in a New Delhi hospital from gunshot injuries sustained in Lucknow last month when she objected to lewd remarks being passed against her daughter-in-law.

As crowds thronged the Bhargava home, Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav ordered the police to get cracking.

DGP Yashpal Singh ordered a probe into the delay in the arrest of main accused Sachin Pahari and police finally picked up K D Singh, a block pramukh from Jaunpur.

“We have picked up K D Singh to gather information on his links with Pahari who was a frequent visitor to his flat in Dilipur Tower,” said Lucknow SSP Ashutosh Pandey. But Luv Bhargava has demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.
