The Rio Olympics enters its Day 2 on Sunday after the first medal was won USA shooter Virginia Thrasher, a lot more will be on offer on the second day as well. For India, it was a mixed day as rower Dattu Bhokal qualified for quarters but shooter Apurvi Chandela and Ayonika Paul failed to reach the final of women’s 10m Air rifle final. Later, Jitu Rai reached the final of men’s 10m air pistol but failed to win a medal at the event and finished eighth.
The men’s hockey team had a great start to their campaign with a 3-2 win over Ireland. Though it was a tough win for India as Ireland made a late comeback to reduce the lead but India held on till the end to win.
India women’s hockey team drew 2-2 with Japan in their opening match of hockey at the Rio 2016 Olympics. From 0-2 down, the team fought back to draw 2-2, with their two goals coming in the third quarter.
In the women’s team archery event featuring Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi, the contest against Colombia went right down to the wire with the tricolour waving high after a score of 5-3. India faced Russia in the quarters and lost 4-5 in the thrilling contest which was decided via a shootoff.
In shooting, Heena Sidhu was first in action on the day in the women’s 10m Air pistol event but she could only score 380 in her four rounds to finish 14th. This meant she won’t be playing later in the medal event.
Also in shooting, India’s experienced Olympian Manavjit Singh Sandhu will take part in the men’s trap event. Alongside him at the same event will be India’s rising star Kynan Chenai. There will be a strong field at the event but no one can count out the two.
Indoors at the Rio Olympic Arena, Dipa Karmakar will begin her attempt at getting a medal after becoming the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympics in the sport.
