PV Sindhu will look to make history when she takes the court on Friday evening India time to take on Carolina Marin of Spain in the gold medal match of the women’s singles event. With her convincing win against Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara of Japan on Thursday in straight games, Sindhu has become a household name – if she wasn’t already. Sindhu has won bronze twice in the World Championship so she’s no new name to the big events and stands at World No 8 in the rankings.
But her charge will be against Marin who is the current World No 1 player and reigning World Champion. Marin got through the stiff challenge of defending gold medallist Li Xuerui of China and for the first time since 1996, there won’t be a double China gold and silver medal for the country which has been a superpower in the sport.
Both players have an in-your-face attitude to their play and are not shy of yelling out loud when in the lead. But in terms of their overall play, Sindhu is more attacking of the two while Marin is more of a tactical and defensive minded player. But, on the day, it all could change wherever the momentum shifts.
