Name: Jwala Gutta, 32,  Jwala Gutta is a left-handed international badminton player from Hyderabad, India. Born on 7th September 1983, the left-hand shuttler has been representing India on the international circuit for more than 15 years. Jwala started playing badminton at the age of six. She likes playing aggressive badminton and currently ranks 14 in Mixed Doubles/ Women’s Doubles category.

She achieved the highest ranking of 6 in the same category in 2010. She has won the National Badminton Championships fourteen times till 2013 and is considered to be country’s top-level badminton player in doubles category. Her father, Kranti Gutta, was from a family of freedom fighters and Leftists from Peddapuliveru in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district.

Career highlights: Jwala Gutta won silver at 2014 Commonwealth Games respectively in women’s doubles. In 2014 Jwala and Ashwini won the bronze medal at Asian Championships.

Records: In 2011, Gutta was awarded the Arjuna award by the Indian Government.

Qualification: She registered a berth after BWF world rankings were released in May earlier this year.

Friday 19 August: Men’s singles semi-finals, women singles final and mixed doubles final.
