India didn’t have a great start to their Rio 2016 Olympics campaign in shooting on day one. Apurvi Chandela and Ayonika Paul bowed out in qualifying in the 10m air rifle event finishing 34th and 43rd respectively. Later Jitu Rai qualified by keeping it late in the qualifying round, but he was the first to go out in the Final. On Sunday, there was more disappointment in store as Heena Sidhu failed to advance in the 10m Air pistol. There is still some hope from Manavjit Singh and Kynan Chenai who will battle it out on Day 2 of the Trap qualifiers on Monday. Here’s a look at how the Shooting Sunday unfolded for India.
India’s shooting day: As it happened
# A poor third round for Sandhu as he misses his target three times and settles for a score of 22. He accumulates 68 from the three rounds
# With scores of 22, 23 and 22 in the three rounds, Kynan Chenai ends with a score of 67
# The qualifying event is spread over two days. Shooters will shoot two rounds today and two tomorrow. Manavjit has missed the target twice in his first two rounds
# At the moment, Sandu is placed 14th in the table with a total score of 56. The one leading the table is Italy’s Massimo with first two rounds of 25 each
#Manavjit Sandhu scores shot 22 in third round
# Shooter Sandhu has now dropped to 26th position. Chenai is 28th.
#Indian shooters haven’t had a good run in this edition
#A bit of a dip in India’s performance
# They are trying to get something out of this competition
#Manavjit moves to 13
# Manavjit Singh is at 14 while CHENAI Kynan is at 27
#And the two shooters from the nation are hanging around… We can just hope they stick around
# Good going for Manavjit Singh Sandhu. He stands third at the moment
# Turn of Manavjit Singh Sandhu’s who has scored 8 to stay fourth at the moment
# On to the trap event then. Kynan Chenai with 22 in the first round
# And that’s that! Heena Sidhu has failed to qualify for the Final in 10m air pistol event
# Back to Sidhu who has scored 95 in the fourth series to stand 14th
# Things also underway in the trap event where Kynan Chenai has 18 in the first round
# Heena posts a 96 in the third series
# 67 after first seven shots for Sidhu in the third series
# At the end of the second series, Heena scores 95 to stand 29th. She needs something special to qualify for the Final
# In the second series, Heena has 57 points from six shots to stand 28th
# In the second series, she’s got 38 from four shots
# At the end of the first series, Heena posts a score of 94.
# After three shots in the first series, Heena has a score of 38. Remember, the top eight qualify for the Final.
# Heena starts with a 10 in the first series. Great start for India!
India’s campaign in the Olympic shooting competition got off on a disappointing note with medal hope Jitu Rai finishing eighth in the men’s 10 metre Air Pistol event here on Saturday.
“I don’t know what happened, my mind has totally gone blank,” said Apurvi Chandela after getting eliminated in the 10 metre air rifle competition for women here at the Olympic Shooting Centre.
