India have very few medal contenders left, but lets not put an end to our hopes at Rio 2016 Olympics. The Indian shooters, including star Olympian Abhinav Bindra, had huge medal hopes but they failed to finish on the podium. The Indian archery team had an impressive start to their campaign but the spark didn’t last too long. The women’s hockey team, too, failed to deliver on the expectations.
With all that being said, India still have some medal prospects left. The Indian contingent might be getting slimmer but some performances have stood out. Lalita Babar qualified for the women’s 3000m steeplechase with a new national record of 9 minutes 19.76 seconds.
Dipa Karmakar has already etched her name in the Indian Olympic history and will be looking to make that a medal finish on Sunday night in Rio. The final round in Gymnastics is scheduled for 23:17 hrs IST.
Gagan Narang and Chain Singh have their last chance of clinching a medal in the Men’s 50m Rifle 3 positions. If they fail to qualify, the shooting contingent will have no more hopes left. The men’s shooting will get underway at 17:30 hrs IST.
OP Jaisha and Kavita Raut will start their marathon campaign on Sunday. Both of them have had brilliant track records at home, but they would be tested in the Marathon event on Sunday. The marathon will start at 18:00hrs IST.
Manoj Kumar, who is in the 64kg category men’s boxing event, will face Fazliddin Gaibnazarov of Uzbekistan in the round of 16. He will assure India of a medal with a win in the quarterfinals.
Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza were left disappointed with their semi-finals loss to Serena Williams and Rajiv Ram, on Saturday. In yet another chance at bagging a medal, albeit a bronze one, Mirza-Bopanna will take on Radek Stepanek and Lucie Hradecka of Czech Republic at 20:30 hrs IST.
The Indian men’s hockey team have had a jittery campaign with defensive questions and conversions of penalty corners. Thereafter, India have had problems making key circle penetrations to have lesser chances at field goals. They will have to beat the mighty Belgians in the quarterfinals on Sunday, starting 21:00 hrs IST, to keep the medal prospects going for India.
