Germany cruises to 4-0 win over Portugal

Germany is playing in its first Olympics since 1988, when it won bronze. Portugal was eliminated.

Germany cruised to a 4-0 victory over Portugal on Saturday to advance to the Olympic semifinals.

Serge Gnabry opened the scoring when Portugal’s goalkeeper Bruna Varela couldn’t reach Gnabry’s shot in stoppage time at the end of the first half. It was his sixth goal of the Olympics.

Mattias Ginter, the youngest player on the German team that won the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, scored in the 57th minute. Davie Selke added a third in the 75th and substitute Philipp Max scored a fourth in the 87th at Brasilia’s Mane Garrincha Staidum.

The winner will play the winner of the late match on Saturday between hosts Brazil and Colombia.
