Palaniappan Chidambaram, better known as P Chidambaram, was a Lok Sabha member from the Sivaganga constituency in Tamil Nadu. After veteran Congressman Pranab Mukherjee went on to become the President of the country, the Congress looked up to Chidambaram as its troubleshooter. When then home minister Shivraj Patil faced flak for 26/11, Chidambaram was asked to replace him. And later, when Pranab Mukherjee was sent to Rashtrapati Bhavan, Chidambaram was shifted to the Finance Ministry. Since then, he has held fort in the North Block office.

Chidambaram, who is said to be the brain behind the reforms undertaken by UPA-II, did not contest Lok Sabha elections this time. His son Karti Chidambaram was chosen to represent the Congress in Sivaganga, but lost the polls.
