Criminal Charge: No
Narendra Modi, who was the challenger, has done what no one could do in the history of this country. Riding on his wave, the BJP has decimated the Congress-led UPA. Not only did he win both his seats, under his leadership, the BJP scripted history by emerging as the only single party to gain majority after 1984.
Modi’s rise in the BJP has been phenomenal. Ensuring three consecutive election victories for the party in Gujarat, Modi launched himself on to the nation stage. Despite stiff opposition from party patriarch LK Advani, Modi was declared the prime ministerial candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. However, his elevation for the top post exposed internal difference in the party.
Modi, who was a low profile BJP office-bearer till he was made Chief Minister of Gujarat to replace Keshubhai Patel in October 2001, controversially came into limelight in the wake of 2002 riots triggered after 59 Kar Sewaks were killed in Sabarmati Express fire on February 27.
Notwithstanding difficulties, Modi has fought on and led BJP to three consecutive elections in Gujarat and virtually decimating the Congress in the state.
This achievement was the main factor that tilted the balance in his favour among the host of BJP leaders, including patriarch Advani, as far as consideration of a face for the next elections was concerned.
