Model Code of Conduct active: EC asks ministry to defer release of advertisement

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has asked the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers to defer the release of an advertisement highlighting its achievements in the poll-bound state of Himachal Pradesh.

The Commission received 32 references relating to the Model Code of Conduct between October 12 and November 7 from the Union government, of which the maximum were from the Central Board of Excise and Customs. The request from the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers to release its advertisement was among the above MCC references.

According to an EC spokesperson, the poll panel disposed of 22 requests in the first three days, six on the same day and the remaining within a week of receipt.

Under the model code, all departments of the Union government have to run all new decisions, announcements and advertisements by the Commission so that the party in power does not have an unfair advantage during the campaign period.
