Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani on Wednesday wrote an open letter supporting Hardik Patel over controversial videos that show the Patidar agitation leader in the company of women. Mevani put up the letter on his Facebook page and circulated it on WhatsApp.

“These tapes show how low politics and politicians can stoop. The entire machinery is trying to silence the voice of a 24-year-old leader. During elections, BJP should focus on issues like the promises they have fulfilled that was laid out in the 2012 manifesto, and not sex videos,” wrote Mevani.

Two videos of the Patidar Anamant Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader have gone viral. In one video, a man resembling Hardik is seen with an unknown woman in “a hotel room”. In the other video, which went viral on Tuesday, a Hardik lookalike is seen relaxing on a bed with two men and a woman.

“This is a shame for Gujarat and the country. The six crores Gujaratis should understand that the people who can ensure that the police, senior IPS officers and secret service can spy on a single woman for ‘saheb’ (Modi), then they can surely enter the bedrooms of people and keep a check on them,” wrote Mevani. The Dalit leader was referring to a 2013 case when then state home minister Amit Shah was accused of misusing his powers and police machinery for illegal surveillance of a young woman in August 2009 at the behest of his “saheb”.

Mevani first backed Hardik on Monday after the first video surfaced. Taking to Twitter, Mevani said, “Dear Hardik Patel, don’t worry. I am with you. And right to sex is a fundamental right. No one has right to breach your privacy.”

Mevani even slammed those who trolled him on social media, enquiring when his “CD” would be released. “Sathio, Facebook ke inbox me messages mat bhejo ki tumhara CD kab aayega ! Jab aaye tab dekh lena… Hahaha (Friends, don’t inbox me asking about my CD…you’ll get to know when it will be there),” Mevani tweeted.

On Tuesday, the PAAS convenor said the videos were morphed. “New techniques are being used by them (BJP) to ensure that saheb (Modi) does not lose in Gujarat,” he had said.

While Hardik has maintained that if the Congress clarified its stand on quotas for the Patels, he would back the party in the December 9 elections. Mevani has not formally joined the Congress, but has said he would work in its favour for the assembly elections.
