According to the reports, the ministry said on Tuesday that the plane was on a bombing mission in Syria and crashed after it came under an artillery attack from the ground.

Turkey confirmed that it shot down a Russian warplane Tuesday, claiming it had violated Turkish airspace and ignored repeated warnings. Russia denied that the plane crossed the Syrian border into Turkish skies.

“We are looking into the circumstances of the crash of the Russian jet,” Russia’s Defense Ministry said. “The Ministry of Defense would like to stress that the plane was over the Syrian territory throughout the flight.”

President Vladimir Putin called Turkey’s downing of a Russian fighter jet “a stab in the back” carried out by the accomplices of terrorists, saying the incident would have serious consequences for Moscow’s relations with Ankara.

Speaking in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi before a meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah, Putin said the downed plane, which Turkey said it had repeatedly warned, had been attacked inside Syria when it was 1 kilometre from the Turkish border and had come down 4 kilometres inside Syria.

NATO will hold emergency an meeting on Tuesday in Brussels on downing of Russian plane.

President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman called the downing of a Russian Su-24 warplane in Syria a “very serious incident”, but said it was too early to draw conclusions.

Russia said the Su-24 was downed by artillery fire, but Turkey claimed that its F-16s fired on the Russian plane after it ignored several warnings. The ministry said the pilots parachuted but added that Moscow had no further contact with them.

Video footage of the incident showed a warplane on fire before crashing on a hill and two crew members apparently parachuting safely.

A Turkish military statement said the plane entered Turkish airspace over town of Yaylidag, in Hatay province. It said the plane was warned 10 times within the space of 5 minutes

Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the warplane crashed in the Turkmen Mountains region in the coastal province of Latakia.

The Turkomen Mountains region has been subjected to a government offensive in recent days under the cover of Russian airstrikes.

Last month, Turkish jets shot down an unidentified drone that it said had violated Turkey’s airspace.

It only shows who are with the terrorists and pays only lip service against terrorism but use them as pawns. Turkey is a small fly and a pawn (against Russia) without the shelter and encouragement from NATO. Only when they (terrorists) do something like 9/11 on the US soil or on US installations/properties abroad - then they become terrorists. Then only the world can say - they are terrorists.

This could very well start ww3. Turkey is supporting ISIS. Erdogonan is hardcore islamist and ISIS would already have been destro if it wasnt for him. Russia destro 1000 trucks in 2 days and thats what erdogonan took revenge for. I wish India and China send su 30 mki and su 35s to guard syrian airspace against nato who are illegally operating in syrian airspace without syrias permission. I think what syria needs to do is turkey shoot all the nato planes out of its sky and not let them fly and support isis till they get permission frmo UN or syria. This is too much...you just cant shoot planes out od the sky for bombing ISIS.

I hope for India's sake that Mr Modi sends a strong public message of support to Russia. This is an opportunity to stand by Russia as they have always done for India. We should not let this event go by in silently. All of India should show itself as a trusted and reliable friend and tell Turkey what we think of suck recklessness!

NATO members are not obliged to retaliate against Russia, if Russia bomb Turkey. I am sure, NATO members (except Turkey) will bark outside and feel good inside.

Russian planes fall on their own , India lost close to 400 planes it is wrong for turkey to make such claims when Russian planes are self sufficiant to fall own their own and don't need any help to bring it down.

If Turkey did indeed shoot it down, then Russia deserves it! Putin is not only mischievous but is also a troublemaker and nothing good comes out of them or their ilk. Ditto also with stan and their leaders.

Really? May be true but the real supporters are conuously quiet! I am referring to Saudi Arabia. The ISIS philosophy of loot, per, maim, kill, and demanding Caliphate is nothing short of Wahhabi b or fi b of Islam. Still flourishing in KSA! BTW these are the same marauders who raided India during the bygone centuries!

Blood is thicker than water. Turkey though most liberated among the Muslim nations and close ally and member of NATO, could not see the Russians killing their brothers even though they are renegades. Islamic Ummah is very strong among Muslims all over the world. Do not trust them.

As Mr Putin said it was a stab on the back, a perfidy encouraged and supported by a super power. Even the UN had suggested that the ISIS must be destro by every available means. That the F16 was used to shoot down the Russian plane and subsequent statements by US authorities says it all who was behind it.
