Earthquake measuring 6.0 hits northern Peru

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 hit Peru at 1008 GMT on Saturday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported. It struck the jungle region in northern Peru.

The quake was centred 54 kilometres (about 30 miles) north-north-east of Moyobamba, at a depth of 114 kilometres, the agency said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the tremor.

According to the USGS map, the quake epicentre is located on the eastern slope of the Andes, where the mountain range meets the Amazon rainforest.
