The US State Department today designated Syed Salahuddin, the head of Kashmiri militant group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, as a specially designated global terrorist. The move comes just hours before the first meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump at the White House.

As a consequence of this designation, US persons are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with Salahuddin and all of Salahuddin’s property and interests in property subject to United States jurisdiction are blocked. As a senior leader of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM), the State Department said in September, 2016, Salahuddin, also known as Syed Mohammed Yusuf Shah, vowed to block any peaceful resolution to the Kashmir conflict, threatened to train more Kashmiri suicide bombers, and vowed to turn the Kashmir valley “into a graveyard for Indian forces”.

“Under Salahuddin’s tenure as senior HM leader, HM has claimed responsibility for several attacks, including the April 2014 explosives attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which injured 17 people,” the State Department said. Following the designation of Salahuddin as the global terrorist, the State Department in a notification said he has committed, or poses a significant risk of committing, acts of terrorism.

India welcomed the US’ move

“India welcomes this notification. It underlines also quite strongly that both India and the US face threat of terrorism,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Gopal Baglay said.

Designations of terrorist individuals and groups expose and isolate organizations and individuals, and result in denial of access to the US financial system. Moreover, designations can assist or complement the law enforcement actions of other nations, it said.

Whenever you shun someone you create a vacuum so you need to understand who is gonna fill that vacuum and what kind of plans you have to tackle that force. Look at recent history, when you shunned Saddam Hussein, vacuum was filled by Al Qaida, which was far worse them him then you went against Al-Qaida and next thing you found that you are fighting against ISIS which is 10 times more extremist and lethal than Al-Qaida. So, this might be a bad strategy in the long run, cause this guy was trying to keep the outfit moderate, once he is out of the picture more radical leadership might take over. This guy was always open for talks next guy may not want any negotiations with India. There was a reason why Obama administration didn't do it, I have zero confidence on Trump administration that they might have seen beyond the obvious.

Pampering Mr Modi on his visit, nothing else. Why did it take so long for the U S A to declare him as a global terrorist ?????????????? What did he do lately for this action now????? The real fact is that the U S A went soft on him because of Pak. Chicken pampering, and not getting more done, which he could have. There are many more areas where this Trump can act and really get a little peace in our region, but is quiet. Which nations bullets and guns are being used by this terrorist organisation ?????????? Why not stop supply of U S weapons and funds to Pak, which is diverting it to the terrorists????????? Till this moment neither Trump nor U S A has really given out any favourable position. /Let's see the game the U S is playing on Modiji's visit.
