At least eight people were injured today following an apparent shooting at Ohio State University, media reported, with the Columbus campus still on lockdown and on alert. One person was in critical condition, CNN reported, citing the Columbus Fire Department. NBC earlier reported that two were in stable condition and the conditions of the others was unknown.
The university’s emergency management service urged students and staff to shelter in place. “Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College,” the service said in a tweet.
“Run, hide, fight” is standard protocol for active shooter situations. It means: Run, evacuate if possible; Hide, get silently out of view; or Fight, as a last resort, take action to disrupt or incapacitate the shooter if your life is in imminent danger.
A Columbus police dispatcher declined to comment on the reports, but police vehicles were seen at the scene.
