Sunayna Dumala, wife of techie Srinivas Kuchibhotla, who died in Kansas shooting incident on February 22, expressed her “relief” after federal hate crime charges were filed against the alleged shooter Adam Purinton. Speaking to Kansas City Star newspaper, Dumala said she heard what she wanted to hear for a long time. “The federal charges brought a lot of relief in my heart,” Dumala said. “I got to hear what I wanted to hear,” the newspaper quoted her saying. “I’m glad that things are moving fast,” she further added.

Dumala, who returned her suburban home in Olathe after Kuchibhotla’s funeral in India, said she was greeted with “piles of letter for support”, which made her feel that her return was justified. After her husband’s death, Dumala had asked in a Facebook post, “Do we belong?” Answering her own question, she told the newspaper that she is starting to believe she does belong in the country. “I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support I received from different corners,” Dumala said. “It made us believe we do belong,” she added.

Dumala said much more still needs to be done to eradicate hate from the country. She further said she hopes the federal trial against the shooting suspect will highlight the need to address bigotry against foreign-born citizens in US and may bring an end to hate crimes in the country. “People can not just take everything for granted,” the newspaper quoted her saying.

Adam Purinton, 51, was indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly shooting Srinivas Kuchibhotla resulting in his death at a Kansas city bar in February 2017. He was also charged for wounding Kuchibhotla’s friend, Alok Madasani in the incident and also injuring an US citizen Ian Grillot who tried to intervene. Police have arrested the suspected on first-degree murder charges. The indictment says Purinton shot Kuchibhotla and Madsani because of their perceived race, colour, religion and national origin.

After the shooting, Dumala had raised questions regarding the safety of Indian citizens in US in a Facebook post that went viral. She questioned the American ‘dream’ every Indian aspires to achieve. “…to answer the question that is in every immigrant’s mind, DO WE BELONG HERE?”” she had written. “Is this the same country we dreamed of and is it still secure to raise our families and children here?” she had asked.

Even after the tragic death of her husband, Sunayna Dumala, the wife of Indian techie was intent on returning to US to "fulfill his dream". Naked lust for good things of life regardless of pitiable existence among racist society. What else?

Thanks for showing the difference between the US and India. Please also raise your voice about what is happening to muslims in India. The terror of cow vigilantism, the beef murders, the attacks on minorities, the attack on JNU and HCU. You mention that your late husband was a big fan of Arnab Cow swami of The Pubic , who is the equivalent of a Trump Hyper nationalist and another baiter of minorities. Have you now understood the need forr progressive and cosmopolitan politics.

Back in your own country we are asking Muslims/Christians to leave India (just because of their beliefs), even though they are natives. Maybe you should write a shining letter to the leaders of this country to show them how you a non-native was made to feel in the US while even natives in India do not feel safe anymore.

What a foolish widow! This will only make things worse in USA and the real sense of belonging will be shown by Trump-Bhakts in the times to come. They leave for a better life for the american dream which does not exist. Despite these adversities choose to stay seeking that elusive pursuit of happiness which will always remain elusive.
