After serving as Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jagdish Mukhi was appointed the Governor of Assam by President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday. The 74-year-old BJP veteran was born at Dajal, Dera Ghazi Khan of Punjab, which is now in Pakistan. Mukhi completed his Masters in Commerce from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University in 1967.
Mukhi became active in politics in June 1975, once Emergency was declared. He represented Janak Puri constituency in New Delhi in 1980, and has won seven times from there.
Mukhi served as Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly from 1998 to 2008. He has also held several porfolios in the Delhi government, including Finance, Planning, Excise and Taxation, and Higher Education. He was awarded the Best Finance and Planning Minister by the then Union Planning Minister, Pranab Mukherjee in 1997. He was also awarded the title of best MLA by Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi in 2002.
