City Development and Town Planning minister Kelachandra Joseph George has been re-registered in an FIR in the abetment of suicide case of two police officers in Karnatala by the CBI. The agency has been directed by an order of the Supreme Court dated September 5, 2017, to conduct a probe into the death of Deputy Superintendent of Police M K Ganapathy in Madikeri town of Kodagu district, Karnataka, in 2016. The CBI’s case names two senior police officers of the state as well.
KJ George’s previous portfolio was Karnataka’s Home Ministry. He has also held the position of MoS Transport, Food and Civil Supplies during the Veerandra Patil government. He was the Housing & Urban Development minster when S Bangarappa was in power. George is married to Suja and has two children -Rana and Renita.
The son of agricultural labourers from Kerala who shifted to Karnataka sometime in the ’60s, he is known to be Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s most trusted man. However, it wasn’t like this always. Their close association can be traced back to as far as just five years. Known to be close to chief ministers, KJ George was counted as a close confident to former CM S Bangarappa as well.
George’s rise from humble beginnings to becoming a multi-millionare businessman is worth watching. The minister reportedly owns racehorses, large pieces of land in Bengaluru and earns crores of money from real estate and other businesses which reporedly includes some in the ship-breaking industry. He claims to have no need for graft or backing as he already pays high taxes on his earnings from his myriad business ventures.
He is known to be close to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and has previously funded the party which he joined in the late ’60s. In the 2013 Karnataka general elections, he won from Sarvagnanagar constituency. He is a member of the state Election Committee member, is the general secretary of the KPCC, an AICC member and a working committee member of the All India INTUC.
