Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s move to demonetise old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes from November 9 has left the country divided. While one segment believes the decision will indeed help target black money hoarders, corruption and terrorism, another segment has been speaking up against mainly the suddenness of the move, which has ended up inconveniencing thousands across India.
Quite obviously, social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook have been buzzing with reactions and comments, including those from Bollywood celebrities and other well-known figures, and that too mostly in favour of the move.
One such support has come from singer Sonu Nigam, who channelled his opinion through a new video, in which he narrates the importance of a simple ‘kaagaz’ (paper). From the pages of history to being a representative the goddess of wealth Lakshmi, the paper takes on many forms, but it is for us to be patient. “Kaagaz, a narration by Sonu Nigam tells us that demonetisation might not be an easy step, but the first step towards a better tomorrow,” reads the description of the video, that is picking up traction on social media.
“When the value of money changes, the fate of the country changes along with it. Keep the faith, my friends. True, the paper is now black, but for those who see it as ashes, there will be a new dawn,” is how he ends the narrative.
The video has been written and directed by Milap Milan Zaveri of Desi Boyz fame and conceptualised by Nigam himself.
