This year has been one of contrasts – while on the one hand incidents of hate and war and discrimination have dominated international news, there have been some highs as well that restore one’s faith in humanity and the thought that all is not lost. The world and its people are still worth fighting and living for.
This CNN video compilation covers those handful of heartwarming moments scattered across the year that have caused us to tear up – heappily, feel elated and hopeful about mankind.
The one-minute-38-second video starts with the moment when both US President Barack Obama and Medal of Freedom recepient Ellen DeGeneres almost choked up when he awarded the comedian and talk show host with America’s highest civilian medal. “It’s easy to forget now just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages 20 years ago,” said Obama.
It goes on to cover the iconic incident at the Rio Olympics this year, when runners Abbey D’Agostino and Nikki Hamblin helped each other complete the race in which both of them were competing, after colliding with each other – and finished last; in another show of sportsmanship and brotherly love, when a triathlete helped his brother over the finish line, ahead of himself at the World Championships in Mexico; or the time when four men formed a human chain to save a woman caught in a flash flood in Maryland, US; when two conjoined twins were successfully separated in a marathon operation; or bringing some light moments in, when Prince George met Obama in his dressing gown.
