After Prime Minister Narendra Modi scrapped Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 on November 8, the country has gone into frenzy. People are struggling with cash for daily use as they don’t have enough valid currency in possession and thanks to long queues outside banks and ATMs, laying their hands on it easily doesn’t seem possible in the near future.
Thousands of people in the past three days have visited banks only to come back empty-handed because banks ran out of cash, similar is the case with ATMs. In banks, there are separate lines for cash deposits, cash exchange, and other processes and there are hundreds of people in each line; especially in public sector banks.
Reportedly, three people in the country have died standing queue waiting for their turn. Some hospitals have denied accepting Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes even though the government has extended the date of accepting old currency to November 14. Daily wage labourers and small-scale traders are the worst hit by the move.
Modi, during his address to the nation, admitted himself that initial days after the announcement will not be smooth. “It will cause some hardship to you….Let us ignore these hardships… In country’s history, there comes a moment when people will want to participate in the nation building and reconstruction. Very few such moments come in life,” he had said.
Amid all the chaos, don’t we all wish we had a currency converter? A converter that would change all the invalid currency into usable cash. Well, there’s one that’s doing the rounds on social media and people can’t stop wishing it actually existed.
