International Day of the Girl Child, also known as Day of the Girl, was first commemorated on October 11, 2012, to spread awareness about gender inequality faced by girls across the globe and to supports more opportunity for them. The inequality it highlights are in areas such as right and access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, violence against women and un-free child marriage.
In support of the event, UNICEF shared a video on Twitter, showing young girls from all across the world dancing on the song Freedom by Beyoncé. The lip syncing and dance steps of these little girls are perfectly synchronised with song and one is left awestruck with the energy that reverberates from the video. Various events are held across the world to promote the day and social media uses hashtag #dayofthegirl to track events and promote everything that has been happening during the Day of the Girl Child.
