Women rights, freedom, equality have been subjected to discussion since time immemorial because the way the role of a woman in a society is perceived is flawed. In this video by Oxfam, an NGO that works towards fighting poverty and injustice, eight men and women are asked a set of 10 questions on gender roles in India, and the answers are very revealing.

The participants are each put under a spotlight, and the questions range from ‘can they walk out on the streets after dark’ to ‘should women change their surname to that of their spouse’s after marriage’. The answers are only in ‘yes’ and ‘no’, in which with each ‘no’ the spotlight dims, and with each ‘yes’, it brightens.

At the end, the play of light and dark leaves a statement on gender bias in the society that needs much more scrutiny than what can be covered in a 2-minute, 30-second video.

Take a look.
