As the death of revolutionary leader Fidel Castro reached the Cuban exiles in Miami, a wave of joy ran through the people who came out to celebrate in huge numbers. These are the people who believe that Castro suppressed dissent under his regime using violent measures and was an authoritarian leader. Many accuse him of mass killings and genocide too.
A video, that has been trending on the internet, shows a Cuban grandmother crying after she hears the news of Castro’s death. She has been suffering from Alzheimer’s but at the mention of the news of Castro’s death, she started crying with joy.
A woman comes twirling into the room, calling out to the grandmother and tells her the news as she wraps the Cuban national flag around her. The woman then kisses her face as the grandmother begins to sob.
The video received 2,90,000 views within a short time of uploading. Her grandaughter Iris Alvarez said, “Not even Alzheimer’s could take away the emotions my abuela Ata felt when she found out that monster had died.”
Many Cuban dissidents have hailed the death of Castro as the death of a dictator, also calling it the beginning of an end and indicating that his death meant freedom for a lot of people.
