Remember the man and his mother who had invited their domestic help’s family for dinner to start a new tradition? In what comes as another change-maker, Indian designer Mandeep Nagi chose a house help to model for her designs.
Kamala* (name changed), domestic help in a Delhi household, caught Nagi’s attention while visiting a friend, and instantly chose Kamal as her model. “The emphasis of our new collection, Cinnamon, is on textures and I wanted someone extraordinary. She carried herself with grace and confidence,” Nagi told The Hindu.
Kamala’s photos shared on Facebook by retail merchandise Jaypore went viral and today she is the not just another domestic help in the Capital, she is the face of a brand’s fashion collection.
The mother of two was a little apprehensive about modelling in the beginning, but after Nagi took her through the process she “went through an entire range of emotions and reactions; from being taken aback to taking the first gingerly step into a world she knew nothing about.”
