The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Wednesday decided to rename the iconic Race Course Road (RCR) as Lok Kalyan Marg, stating that the former does not “match with the Indian ethos and value system”. According to BJP’s Meenakshi Lekhi, the name Race Course Road “conveys a feeling of disassociation and it can’t be the inspiration for any PM”. So now, the Prime Minister of India has a new address: 7, Lok Kalyan Marg.
What else is making news
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, which was attended by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi among others. The council meeting was called after Lekhi proposed that RCR be renamed. She had, however, suggested Ekatma Marg, based on the philosophy of BJP ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya.
This is not the first time that the government has decided to rename a prominent road. In August 2015, the council renamed Aurangzeb Road after APJ Abdul Kalam, following a demand by BJP MP Maheish Girri, who said the renaming should be seen as a measure to “correct mistakes in our history”.
New Delhi’s famous Race Course Road, significant to Lutyens’ heritage of the city, is no more. It was named after the Delhi race course, part of Delhi Race Club that was established in 1940.
However, when the news broke, many did not seem to take kindly to the decision to rename the road. Few users on Twitter mocked and criticised the government, while others were furious as the nations mourns the death of our soldiers in the Uri attack.
Here is how Twitterati reacted to the news:
It’s so good to know that everything is alright with the world & we can focus on the stuff that really matters – renaming roads #7LKM
