After the death of J Jayalalithaa, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the state, as well as the country is yet to come to normalcy. While the Internet has been buzzing with people sharing condolence messages and anecdotes with Amma, the question about who is the rightful heir of her property and assets is looming large. This is the photograph of a young woman – who looks very much like Jayalalithaa – started doing the rounds on social media. The woman, dressed in a green sari, was rumoured to be the former CM’s ‘secret daughter’.

Many WhatsApp messages and Facebook posts went viral after they claimed how Jayalalithaa’s ‘daughter’ was living in the United States, in anonymity. Both the photograph and the image led to speculation about Jayalalithaa’s personal life, which she kept highly guarded. While no one seems to have cared to know what the reality is, popular singer and TV show host Chinmayi Sripada posted the truth on Facebook, recently, in an attempt to put an end to the rumours.

According to Sripada’s post, the woman, in fact, belongs to the family of renowned Mridangam Vidwan V Balaji, and admonished social media users for callously forwarding messages without trying to understand how it could affect the concerned people. The lady in the picture has been identified as Divya Ramanathan Veeraraghavan and lives with her husband in Australia.

I received these photographs attached with ridiculous ‘news’.
The couple in the photograph are known to my family and they belong to an illustrious family of classical musicians.
This rumour has been propagated long enough for even google image search to return with similar results.
Like they say, repeat a lie long enough and it becomes ‘truth’.
Please, please stop sharing ridiculous ‘news stories’ created clearly as a figment of the imagination of an unstable mind.
She belongs to the family of renowned Mridangam Vidwan V Balaji. When he is not busy with concerts he is a part of the web series called ‘Husbanned’.
If people were half as interested in investing the time sharing whatsapp forwards into being better citizens, our country would be wayy better.

Following the singer’s Facebook post, Trivandrum V Balaji, Veeraragavan’s brother-in-law also took to Facebook to thank the singer for making it easier for his family.

“Clarification regarding my sister in law being portrayed as daughter of former Chief minister Selvi J.Jayalalitha which has been in circulation for a while in social media. The person in this picture is my sister in law and we know her since her childhood and this has been annoying us for a while. Thanks to good friends like Chinmayi Sriprada and others who have done their best to clarify this in public. I request my friends and well-wishers to share this as much as possible and hence help clarify. I would request and appreciate my friends and well-wishers to share this..ur sharing is much important here. Thanks a lot.”

Reportedly, the family saw the photograph being shared online last year as well, but did not raise an issue back then because they thought just like anything else on the Internet, this will too have a short life span. Especially after Jayalalithaa’s death, it got worse for the family, which is when Sripada decided to help the family.

But there are still people who have raised doubts and commented on Balaji’s posts as to why the two pictures of Divya that are going viral on the Internet, look so different. To that he had said that it was simply because one was taken in 2008 and the other fairly recently.

So, should this picture make its way to you, you now know what not to do.
