In a bizarre incident, a 40-year-old man bit a devotee’s ear in his bid to enter the core area of a temple to offer prayer, following which, he was arrested, police said today.

Shivaji Nana Salunke alias Yuvraj was one among scores of devotees who had queued up at the Swayambhu Amarnath yesterday for the festival of Mahashivratri to offer his prayers. However, he jumped out of the queue and tried to enter the inner sanctum with his footwear on, Thane Police PRO Gajanan Kabdule said.

People standing in the queue started shouting, objecting to his entering the sanctum wearing footwear, after which he started manhandling fellow devotees, the PRO said.

Amid the scuffle, Shivaji bit the left ear and fingers of a 70-year-old man, Baburao Patil. He also tried to manhandle the duty policeman Tausif Khan and hurled abuses at him.

A complaint was later lodged by the policeman against Shivaji, who was subsequently arrested.
