A housewife in Malappuram district of Kerala got the shock of her life when she saw her name on her ration card, which she had given for a renewal. It read in big bold letters “SERENA WILLIAMS.” Her husband was confused how his wife, whose first name though is Serena, came to acquire the name of the world-famous American tennis star, a report in Manorama online said.
Yes, Kerala may sit pretty high on the literacy chart in India, but it is notorious for issuing ration cards under bizarre names. Sometimes, men acquire female names and vice versa. If you are a resident of the state, your age and your address may also go for a toss. Many have called it a blot on the state’s extensive and quite efficient public distribution system, but they all agree it comes down to human errors made in front of the computer.
The ration card fiasco was reported at the home of Abu Backer in Edappal. Earlier, his wife’s name was added to Abu Backer’s card as a family member. Other family members have also complained of errors in their ration cards. The Manorama report said although the errors can be rectified via an online system, there is only a single chance you get. So if you still end up being a tennis star, you have only yourself to blame.
