Anupam Kher appointed as the Chairman of FTII; Twitterati react with wishes and sarcasm

Actor Anupam Kher has been appointed as the chairman of Film and Television Institute of India (FTTI) in Pune on October 11. The 62-year-old actor, who was previously held posts of chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and the National School of Drama, will replace the very controversial Gajendra Chauhan. Kher, who made his debut in 1982, has acted in several films and for his contribution in the field of art and cinema has been awarded with the Padma Shri in 2004 and Padma Bhushan in 2016.

The announcement has had quite an impact on social media. While some users are applauding the decision of appointing the veteran actor was the chairman, others still seem sceptical. “Congrats to #AnupamKher for his appointment as Chairman of FTII, he has been rewarded for his hard work & wonderful acting in past 3 yrs,” wrote a user, another wrote, “Sir #AnupamKher ji is new #FTII chairmen.. ab Award waapsi ke baad ‘Actors/Directors/Intellectuals’ log ‘Degree Waapsi’ chalayenge.”

Several people on social media are extremely happy with the decision and are congratulating him. But not all are pleased.

The appointment of Chauhan who had taken charge on June 9, 2015, was met with severe protests from a section of students, teachers and alumni the institution. They had maintained that Chauhan lacked the credentials to head a renowned institute like FTII.
