On July 20, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi was allegedly caught sleeping in Parliament even as the House was debating the atrocities against Dalits in Gujarat. Home Minister Rajnath Singh was presenting the government’s views on the issue. Last week self-proclaimed ‘gau rakshaks’ thrashed seven Dalit youth in Una over the alleged killing of a cow.

Senior leader Renuka Choudhary quickly responded to Gandhi’s ‘sleeping’ fiasco. “How can anyone sleep amid much uproar? He was not sleeping,” she said. Fair point made but people on social media still couldn’t stop joking about it.

In fact, an interactive medium as it is, people have dug out photos and videos of various politicians napping during sessions in Parliament including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Textile Minister Smriti Irani.

Irani’s video first surfaced in May 2016 when the then HRD minister was reportedly caught sleeping in the second half of the Budget Session. On the other hand, Modi’s picture is from November 2015 when it went viral on social media with the hashtag #PMModiSleepsOnConstitutionDay and many more. It was also contradicted that he wasn’t sleeping but merely put his head down for a few seconds.

Twitter can sometimes prove to be an explosive place.
