A 72-year-old woman has delivered a baby after 46 years of her marriage at a Hisar-based fertility centre.

The couple — Mohinder Singh Gill (79) and his wife Daljinder Kaur — were childless and decided to have a baby through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) three years ago.

“They (couple) came to us three years ago as they did not have a child even after several years of their marriage,” Dr Anurag Bishnoi, owner of National Fertility and Test Tube Baby Centre said today.

“The first two attempts failed. But Daljinder conceived in third attempt last year,” he told PTI over phone.

“The baby boy and mother are healthy,” he said.

In IVF technique, eggs are collected from the woman’s ovaries and then fertilised by husband’s processed sperms in a test tube in a controlled laboratory environment. The resulting embryos are then deposited into the women’s uterus.

Bishnoi said this is the second case in which a woman over 70 years of age has become a mother at the centre.

Earlier, Rajo Devi, a resident of Jind district in Haryana, had become mother through IVF at the age of 70 years in 2008.

Gill and his wife are feeling great at becoming parents at their age. They have named the baby boy Armaan.

When asked about the feeling of having a baby at this age, she said, “People have different dreams but everything happens when god wants.”

“I don’t care about what people are going to say, the fact that I have been blessed with motherhood is more important,” she said. “My husband and I never gave up hope of becoming parents,” she added.

When asked would it be difficult to bring up a child at this ripe old age, she said, “That thought never crossed my mind. God will take care of everything.”

Daljinder said she earlier had miscarriages

Dr. Bishnoi, who did the IVF should lose his license to practice medicine - if not on legal then on ethical and moral grounds!

This is a crime against a child. By the time the child is 10, both parents will be dead and gone. It is totally abhorrent, illogical and totally contrary to reasoning and commonsense. If you can not be responsible to shoulder the responsibility of taking the kid to maturity (18 years at least), then you should not be having kids. She should have adopted a teenager instead.

With his genetic material coming from a geriatric father, the telomeres on this child's chromosomes will be literally absent. This kid is bound to have health problems and like, Dolly the sheep, may not have a long lifespan at all. The doctor who aided this IVF is a criminal.
